About This Place
Liu Haisu Art Museum is China’s first state-owned art museum at the provincial or municipal level to be named after an individual artist. The original museum was completed and opened in March 1995. Liu Haisu was a pioneer of China’s New Art Movement and one of the founders of modern art education. In his later years, he donated all of his major lifetime works and his collection of calligraphy and paintings from past dynasties to the nation without compensation. In 2012, the museum was relocated and rebuilt. The new museum is set among lush trees, with an exterior design inspired by the artistic imagery of “cloud seas, mountains and rocks” in his paintings. Its colors are understated, and its form is distinctive. With a total floor area of 12,540 square meters, it has six galleries, two classrooms, a reading room, a conference hall, and a multifunction hall, and now holds more than 2,000 works.
