Former Site of St. Mary’s Girls’ School
The Former Site of St. Mary’s Girls’ School was built in the modern era. With its elegant architectural style, it once served as an important place for girls’ education and reflects the historical changes in the development of modern education in Changning.
The Former Site of St. Mary’s Girls’ School is located at 1187 Changning Road, Changning District, Shanghai. Built with a brick-and-timber structure, it is laid out around a central lawn. The church and teaching buildings make extensive use of semi-circular arches and Tuscan columns. The campus buildings were originally connected by covered corridors, parts of which remain today. In 2005, it was listed as an Outstanding Historical Building of Shanghai.
After the 1880s, Wenji Girls’ School and Biwen Girls’ School merged to form St. Mary’s Girls’ School. In 1923, it moved to a new campus in Changning District and was renamed St. Mary’s Girls’ Middle School. In the early 1950s, it merged with McTyeire School for Girls and was renamed Shanghai No. 3 Girls’ High School. Later, the former St. Mary’s Girls’ Middle School campus was used by Shanghai Textile College. It is now managed and used by Shanghai Raffles City Changning Commercial Management Services Co., Ltd.
