Hexi Grand Canal Guardian Beast Plush Hanging Charm

In ancient times, Tongzhou was where five rivers of the Grand Canal met, and grain transport flourished. During flood seasons, however, water disasters often occurred. People placed water-calming guardian beasts along both banks of the river. According to legend, these beasts guarded the river veins, calmed floods, and protected passing grain-transport boats and riverside residents. They were seen as spiritual guardians of the canal, bringing protection from disaster and blessings of good fortune. The name comes from the idea that rivers bring joy and water nourishes Tongzhou: the waters of the Grand Canal nurtured the land of Tongzhou, and wherever the river flowed, happiness grew.
